About the Department
The Modern Foreign Language Department offers you the opportunity to study Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

The department offers both major and minor programs in several different areas. Through these programs, the department seeks to broaden a student's international horizons. Global markets require a global perspective, so High Point University's Modern Foreign Language Department wants to do more than simply teach you to speak a foreign language. The department is committed to helping you develop an international outlook by exposing you to the world of languages, cultures and literature.
In addition to upper-level courses typically offered at most universities (literature, grammar, composition), the department offers you courses in Business French, German and Spanish; courses in the culture and civilization of France, Germany and Spain; film courses in Spanish and French; current events in French and Spanish; Francophone civilization/literature; and Latin American civilization/literature. You can also gain communicative skills in Chinese, Italian and Japanese. All courses are taught in the target language, and native speakers teach in each language. Instruction incorporates video components and other information technologies. Qualified students at advanced levels of French/German/Spanish may apply to serve as teaching assistants in a one-hour conversation course at the beginning/intermediate level. Qualified students of all languages offered have the opportunity to serve as tutors in the Academic Services Center.
We can also enhance your career possibilities by preparing you to compete in the world market. We offer not only the traditional majors in French and Spanish, the minor in German, and communicative skills development in Chinese, Italian and Japanese, but also interdepartmental majors in international business and international studies. At our departmental career seminar you will hear professionals tell how they use their language skills on the job.
The language ability and cross-cultural awareness of our students are of vital concern to the members of the department, and they are committeed to helping you become citizens of a global community.
